Yellow-billed Cuckoo Survey Workshop and Training Sessions

Southern Sierra Research Station offers a workshop each spring for individuals who study Yellow-billed Cuckoos on the summer breeding grounds. As this species life history strategies are being revealed annually, these workshops incorporate some of the most recent findings and up to date methodologies for working with Yellow-billed Cuckoos.

Workshops will be held in Kern River Valley, California: May 18 & 19 (starts at 1pm); Petaluma, California: May 28 (starts at 9am); and Lake Havasu City, Arizona June 9 and June 10, 2010 (starts at 1pm).

Workshop Information and materials

Kern River Valley:

The workshop will be held at the Southern Sierra Research Station’s Headquarters, located at 7872 Fay Ranch Rd. SSRS is located off of Highway 178 in the mountains east of Bakersfield near Lake Isabella. At 1:00 pm on May 18, we will meet the Research Station. To get there turn north (the only direction you can go!) on Fay Ranch Rd - at the South Fork School – from Hwy 178, approximately 2 ½ miles east of KRP. The research Station is 1.5 miles down the road on the right. The next morning we’ll meet at the Kern River Preserve at 6 am for the field portion of the workshop.

In May, the weather in the Kern River Valley can be highly variable, we could have a late winter storm, or the temperatures could be in the 90’s. Typically, the daytime temperatures are in the high 80’s or low 90’s and the nighttime temperature is in the 50’s. Please be prepared for both hot and cold temperatures. Also, bring the following gear with you to the workshop: binoculars, rubber boots (optional), hiking boots, sunscreen and mosquito repellent. Also, to help reduce waste, please bring a water bottle and coffee mug. We will provide water, coffee and tea on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

For more information about the area and for a list of the motels in the area please check the following website: http://www.natureali.org/accommodations.htm
